Metal or not?
Discuss.

EDIT: When preparing your discussion, do not forget that "metal" takes on many forms. Consider "Hair Metal" in particular when formulating your theory.

*And while I do not usually promote wikipedia as anything that should ever be used for true research, in this informal setting I think it can allowed. And so I refer you to the entry for Glam Metal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glam_metal

Discuss.

EDIT #2: Ok. Let's pretend that in this instance and in this instance only, Hair Metal is indeed a legitimate subset of Metal. Did Bon Jovi fall under that, or did they sway too far into the pop side of it? Are they only called hair metal because of their hair, or does the music qulaify them as well?

No more metal than Poison, or early 90s Motley Crue. Therefore, not metal. Then again, I am a metal purist!

I cracked up when I saw [info]poinsonorchid's comment below 'cause I've always referred to bands like Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant, et. al. as "cock rock". I always thought it was a local thing, because in high school back in Utah that's one of the elements of what we called an "F-dude" or an "F-chick": the kids who listened to those bands, wore acid-washed jeans and drove beater cars with huge spoilers on the back. And smoked Reds, had huge permed hair and said "fuck" a lot. I've not heard the term cock rock in some time. But, I digress.

Anyway, I'm going to have to reference another commenter, who said it better than I could have: [info]oh_really_now hit the nail on the head. I guess a lot of it depends on who you're talking to. Just like there are now a hundred zillion genres of music (Shoegaze? Beardcore? C'mon...) there are just as many ways to interpret and classify artists and their music. When I think of metal, I think of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Anthrax, Pantera, Motorhead... and when I think of hair bands/glam metal, I think of Bon Jovi, Poison, Cinderella, Skid Row, etc... but that could just be my interpretation.

This is a fun post... and it got me thinking that surely there is some sort of meme-y metal quiz online. Sho' 'nuf:

Fucking hell yes! You are obviously in the know on the subject of what IS true heavy metal! You probably are a musician yourself. Go, you! Keep the faith and continue to support your local TRUE HEAVY METAL and we'll see you at the next show!

Saying "Hair Metal" is like saying "Pop Punk". Punk can never be popular and metal can never be...hairy? Okay, replace Hair Metal with Glam Metal, it makes sense. Metal, by definition, cannot be ~*glamorous*~. Yeah, the record companies make up these sub genres of music, but it's all just a watered down version of whatever they are ripping off.

Totally Metal

Bon Jovi is a slippery leaf on the Heavy Metal tree, but they are part of the beast. Hair > Glam > Pop > Cockrock > Power Ballad Machines > all part of METAL EVOLUTION. Like Charles Darwin at a Cannibal Corpse concert. They're totally presenting a subset of Metal. Lotsa 70's hardrock/heavymetal featured pop hooks and keyboards ... it just kept getting wussier and wussier ... the O.G. glam fellas wore makeup and used hairspray but their guitars were louder and they had that undercurrent of coolass boogie. Bon Jovi begat Warrant and Europe and Trixter and Extreme and hundreds of others but they're all hairs on the mighty ballsac that is Heavy Metal. Longhaired dudes playing guitars on stage, trying to get laid after ...
